Not much is known about the seemingly introverted producer that goes by the moniker South London Ordnance. The young twenty-something grew up and attended University in the industrial southern regions of London, where his background stems from visual art and design. It was during his studies that the necessity to create surpassed strictly visual solutions leading him to the path of music production.

Since surfacing on the more techno oriented side of bass culture, SLO has released an impressive amount of quality original material. With a catalog boasting the support of labels such as 2nd Drop, MadTech, Well Rounded, and now Amsterdam’s esteemed Audio Culture Label, The Big Boss Theme EP greatly outweighs its predecessors.

It’s title “The Big Boss Theme,” introduces the EP. Pulsating synth loops lead the body of the composition while its thumping kick drags along towards the sub heavy dubbed bassline. Immaculate uses of delay on the drum loop set a slightly deep house inspired groove, all compressing together to form a very tight club oriented A-side.

“Booty Call” draws from a darker side of techno, but doesn’t cross the line into the satanic sounds of someone like Blawan. Grinding basslines tossed against metallic ticks of the high hats make this the biggest track of the EP. “Harrier,” seems to distract, acting somewhat as filler feeding off already familiar ideas, yet it chugs along focusing on the obvious dub techno influence. “The Question (The What?)” and Turkish Delight, the EP’s digital bonus tracks are South London Ordnance’s chance to display a slightly less functional take on his signature sound and one I hope this young producer continues to chase.

Korean street brand LIFUL just sent us over a lookbook to check out and we loved it from the beginning. This new Korean brand is a fusion of upscale outdoor wear and many traditional clothing icons like the pea-coats, furry-hooded downjackets and even a few washed jean jacket. The beauty in this brand and “The Lost Explorer” collection is the ultra simplistic cuts of all this outerwear. Follow this up and coming brand on their site and pick up some new gear at their online shop.

Scuba’s Hotflush imprint show’s its expansive breadth of material in the form of their thirty-fifth release from Shelter Point. A duo made up of twenty year old’s Liam and Robin both residing in Nottingham, England. This impressive three track EP titled “Forever For Now” is set to release on October 22nd 2012. “Braille” the introductory A-side is available to stream on Hotflush’s Soundcloud as well as a sample of the entire EP.

“Braille,” begins with a captivating introduction, relying heavily on it’s continuous synth line. The simple drum kicks become equally as interesting, resembling sounds of shattered glass. The vocal takes on the same minimal qualities as its instrumentals, casting a soulful and moody undertone. In it’s short four minutes “Braille” creates a perfectly textural sense of atmosphere and emotion. “Forever For Now” is sure to be one of the better releases as 2012 slowly starts to close. Coming to you from Long Beach, California is a new lookbook from Calico No.9. This lookbook is showcasing their newest collection called “Self-Contained”, which includes two new tank tops and hats. The color patterns in this collection are primarily black and red with white accents. This new line is modeled by a Waka Flocka look alike and a big ass snake. This week I had the opportunity to get in contact with the two brains behind the new LA booty bass duo, Wood Holly. Dean Katzelis and Ethan Berkowitz have hit the scene this week with two debut releases on Into the AM and Anabatic Records . Wood Holly’s future bass style has implanted them in a bed of West Coast artists such as Claude VonStroke and Worthy that can be viewed as some of the foremost pioneers in the genre. With a release on Worthy’s label (Anabatic) I would say these guys are heading in the right direction and I am excited to see what they do in the future. Interview:
1. How did the two of you come about producing music together?

We have been friends since high school and both started producing
around the same time. We made a few electro beats together until we
decided we wanted to do something different.

2. What are your musical backgrounds? Have you both always had an
interest in electronic music?

Dean: I am truly into almost everything when it comes to music but
electronic music is something I have always been fascinated with. My
Dad would always be playing Prodigy, Moby and the first Jock Jams
compilation. I used the first version of Fruity Loops when i was 10
years old.

Ethan: My first cd was Dr. Dre 2001 back in ’99 and my older brother
got me raised on hip hop. On the other side of things, my mom’s side
of the family was super into country/bluegrass so I grew up around a
wide spectrum of music. I’ve been playing guitar for the past decade
and that evolved into learning to play a little bit of every instrument
which led to computer-based music.

3. What do you guys enjoy about living in LA? What do you find
most appealing about the music scene there?

The weather, food, girls, art, what’s not to love about LA. We love
the variety of music out here. So many cool underground venues where
we can see some of the best rising bass music artists the world has to
offer.

4. Having released your most recent tracks on Anabatic, what has
inspired the future bass/“booty bass” style represented in hoe hoe
hoe?

We are both huge west coast hip-hop fans but we wouldn’t know about
this future bass movement if it wasn’t for Claude Vonstroke and
Dirtybird Records. When we found out that there are other bass music
labels such as Anabatic we were really excited.

5. What influenced the decision to switch away from your
Skyrunner project to Wood Holly?

Dean: I think after Ethan and I made a few tracks I decided I wanted
to dedicate all my time to this. My heart just wasn’t in it I guess.

6. Do you guys have a preferred setup in the studio? Djing?

We just use FL studio and a pair of monitors. When we perform we use
CDJ’s. We might get into doing some sort of live show in the future.

7. Outside of music what do you guys like doing?

Dean: Playing basketball, watching addicting shows, following my
favorite sports teams.

Ethan: Being outdoors, keeping up with my fantasy football team, wearing hats.

8. Where do you guys enjoy going if you are looking to listen to
some good music in LA?

Avalon, Echoplex, King King, Focus (OC), Yost Theater (OC), There are
a bunch of other venues that we haven’t had the chance to check out.

9. What artists have spiked your interest lately?

Dean: Kill Frenzy, Nick Monaco, Sepehr, French Fries, Manare, Shlomo
and many more.

Ethan: Bauuer, Flume, Purity Ring, and a lot of the new LA hip hop (Kendrick, Dom, Ab-Soul)

10. What do you guys have planned for the future? Any projects in the works?

After the Anabatic release on the 25th we have another one coming out
on Into The AM Records mid October. We are working with a few artists
right now. Expect many big things from us in the future.

Lifted Research Group has just released their first ever footwear collection. In terms of these shoes LRG is taking the tree logo to heart, a majority of the new releases are hybrids of LRG influenced hiking shoes. The remaining few are classic high-tops, mid-tops and lows in earth tones. LRG has added its flair to these shoes by creating a new maple leaf camouflage pattern topped off with the LRG tree logo. Most of these kicks are available at the LRG online shop.

You know it is a good morning when you stumble across a great EP on your soundcloud. In this case I was lucky enough to catch a release off Worthy’s Label, Anabatic. This has been a great year for Anabatic with releases from Nick Monaco, Tom Flynn, Kill Frenzy, and more. Since its creation Anabatic has been at the forefront of the tech house/future bass genre by introducing countless artists to the masses and releasing many instant classics. If you enjoy the 808 booty shakes than this Wood Holly EP is right up your alley. Based out of LA, Wood Holly has definitely hit a landmark with this release in their producing careers. Their fist official release was with Into the AM earlier this week and I am sure we will see their Anabatic EP pop up on beatport within the next couple days. It is with great honor and privilege that I write this post for you today. About a year ago the West Coast Leak formed a relationship with a young, talented local producer by the name of Nathan Asman. Over this past year we have featured many of his productions on the Leak that you all have seen under the name Hamilton Beach. Over this past year, Hamilton Beach has grown, and is now headed in a direction that I believe has even surprised Nate himself. With the addition of guitarist Keith Randel, bassist Max Miller and drummer Travis Lien, Hamilton Beach has grown into a full band, and has given itself the amazing ability to pursue unrestricted creative musical development. They say there is power in numbers and Hamilton Beach, with it’s recent additions has proved this to be true.

Since adding the full band to equation, Hamilton Beach has released a few new tracks like, The Beat and Ahoy that have given us listeners a taste of the potential that these musicians have to create beautiful music together, but their newest track H&H is the first of their work that has shown us what they are fully capable of. For those of you familiar with Hamilton Beach, H&H is thus far the peak of the sound in which this band has been working so hard to create. H&H blends Nate’s electronic production perfectly with the jammy melodies and harmonies that Keith and Max have constructed. For those savvy to the jam scene, H&H is best compared to Lotus’s music for its light, ethereal melodies and amazingly elated vibes. This song is a huge step forward for Hamilton Beach, and I for one am excited to see what is to come from this young and talented band.
